Each spring, something very special happens in our Primary (3–6) classrooms. The children who once entered as three-year-olds—some quietly observing, others… perhaps not quite so quietly)—are now the confident leaders of the community. After years of practice, patience, and growth, our kindergarten students hold a unique place in our classrooms, and they are valued and needed immensely by everyone around them.

We see it in small moments throughout the day. A kindergartener kneeling beside a new classmate, gently showing them how to carry a tray. A reminder to push in a chair or to say thank you. A proud smile after completing a challenging piece of work they once only watched older children do.

Academically, this year is just as remarkable. Reading blossoms from careful decoding into genuine enjoyment. Mathematical thinking deepens in ways that often surprise adults—fractions, multiplication, and complex patterns all become meaningful because of the years children have spent building understanding with Montessori materials. Cultural studies open the door to the wider world as children explore countries, people, and traditions beyond their classroom walls.

But perhaps the most beautiful transformation is the confidence that emerges. Everyone in the classroom recognizes the important role the kindergarteners play. These children know the environment. They understand its rhythm and what is needed of them without being asked—a skill many teenagers are still developing. They trust themselves within it. And because of that, they step naturally into leadership—guiding younger classmates, caring for the community, and taking real pride in what they can do.

This photo captures our kindergarten students from all three of Countryside’s 3–6 classrooms. Each child’s journey has been unique, but together they represent something very special—the culmination of years of perseverance, growth, and independence.

We are so proud of them and grateful to witness the moment when the youngest children in the room become the ones everyone else looks up to.
